Production

A business's impact can be viewed through many different lenses, however, in its simplest form describes the effect it has on the things it comes into contact with. For us this means the people that we work with and sell to, the environment, and the natural resources that we use to create our products. Learn more about what we’re doing as a business to measure, reduce and offset this impact.

There is no single thing a business can do to be considered a sustainable, no silver bullet. It must be a sum of all its parts and there is always something more that can be done, something new to learn, something to be improved.

As a responsible business we are committed to measuring our impact on the planet and to work hard to reduce this impact in everything we do. Below are some of the actions we currently take and some of the goals that we have set ourselves to do better.

IN BED HQ & Flagship

Both the IN BED Head Office & Flagship store are 100% Carbon Neutral. We have chosen to work with PathZero to measure & offset our emissions.

As a team we have developed an integrated Environmental Management System (EMS) to hold ourselves accountable and ensure we are measuring our impact and working toward the best practice at every level. A link to our EMS can be viewed here and includes our internal policies on waste, composting, travel etc.

Supply Chain

The majority of emissions produced by a product based business like IN BED is through our supply chain. Due to the intricacies of supply chains measuring your true impact is a complicated task, but we are committed to ensuring IN BED is a completely carbon neutral business within 2022.

We work closely with a trusted network of certified suppliers to plan out our ordering for the year. This means we’re not overproducing or freighting goods more than needed. We use only sea freight to transport our product from supplier to warehouse unless absolutely necessary and, as several of our factories in Portugal are in close proximity, wherever possible we consolidate supplier shipments to reduce our emissions and ship in a more sustainable way.

Targets & Goals

We believe the work is never done. That's why we're always learning, improving and introducing new initiatives to ensure IN BED is the best it can be for our customers, our team and our community. Below are a few things we’re currently working on:

1. The Path to Becoming an Entirely Carbon Neutral Business

Although our HQ and Flagship store are carbon neutral, the majority of emissions produced by a product based business like IN BED is through our supply chain. Due to the intricacies of supply chains measuring your true impact is a complicated task, but we are committed to ensuring IN BED is a completely carbon neutral business within 2022.

From an environmental standpoint we’ve been working hard to put processes in place to allow us to track our supply chain impact for the entire 2021-2022 FY to be able to offset these emissions, but equally as important, to be able to then reduce this impact for FY 2022 - 2023. We aim to reduce our emissions by a minimum of 5% YoY but will review this once we have a full year of records to see if we are able to further reduce this.

2. Becoming B-Corp Certified

We are currently registered to become B-Corporation certified some time in early 2022, meaning we’ll join a network of businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

3. Auditing Packaging Across The business

We are currently auditing all packaging used across our business. Although we opt for reusable, recyclable or FSC certified packaging, there is still room for us to reduce our overall use of packaging and consumption as a business. Below is a list of actions we are currently working through with this goal in mind;

  • Transition branded linen bags used to protect our sleepwear to home compostable poly bags (made from 100% biodegradable materials) by early 2022. Whilst our linen bags are made from a more sustainable fabric, when not required by the customer in general ‘eco-friendly’ fabric bags are becoming part of the problem.
  • Whilst we will be continuing to use our IN BED bags for our linen bedding (as they are generally used for storing linen when not in use) we are looking to utilise an ‘opt-in’ solution for linen bags so the customer can choose not to receive the bags if they do not wish, instead receiving their product in a home compostable poly bag to protect it.
  • We will be transitioning all IN BED branded cotton ribbon (used to package & hold together our kitchen linens, heavy linen products & cushions) to recycled cotton within the first half of 2022.
  • Trialling compostable master poly bags for our supplier shipments, with the view to transition all master poly bags to entirely compostable, biodegradable bags within 2022.
