Materials

As a certified B Corporation that places sustainability at the heart of all that we do, we work exclusively with high quality, fully traceable & natural materials across all of our collections. We find these fabrics are not only the most beautiful to create with, but also the most gentle on the environment.

European Flax® Certified Linen

Our signature 100% Linen collection is made from certified European Flax®. Grown in Europe and spun and woven by a centuries old linen house in Italy, it is then sewn, dyed and finished by our factory in Portugal. IN BED’s Heavy Linen is manufactured in Portugal by a family owned & operated business with a strong interest in sustainability; utilising solar panels for energy and having an active procedure to reduce water & energy consumption. They also operate their own cogeneration facility providing energy to the national power grid and hold the coveted Masters Of Linen certification.
Flax linen is one of the most environmentally friendly fibres in the textiles industry. It requires much less water than most other fibres to cultivate and every part of the flax plant can be utilised to create diverse and valuable products, meaning there’s no waste. The flax plant also has a high rate of carbon absorption and creates a carbon sink, storing 400,000 tons of CO2 in Europe each year. Few, if any, pesticides and fertilisers are required in the cultivation of flax, and often flax comes close to the organic standard without trying.
At IN BED we work exclusively with linen that holds a European Flax® certification, meaning the flax has been produced in Western Europe (France, Belgium, or The Netherlands), and also guarantees a high level of traceability and accountability through each stage of production, ensuring the following standards are met;
  • No irrigation (rainwater only)
  • No GMO
  • Zero waste
  • Mechanical scutching (ensuring zero chemicals are used in this process)
  • Natural field retting (also known as ‘dew retting’), and that
  • Fibre production is in compliance with International Labour Organisation rules
Both our 100% Linen & Heavy Linen is OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, ensuring no harmful or toxic dyes have been used during any part of the production and that every component of the product (every thread, button and other accessories) has also been tested for harmful substances, ensuring the product is completely safe & toxin free.

Organic Cotton

Since 2020, IN BED has been committed to working exclusively with Organic Cotton. Our Cotton Percale & Textured Cotton bedding and Cotton Poplin sleepwear is made only using GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified cotton. GOTS certification is the worldwide leading textile standard for organic fibres, measuring ecological and social impact across the entire textile supply chain.

Conventional cotton cultivation uses an abundance of water & pesticides along with causing a variety of social issues in cotton producing countries. Organic farming practises avoid using harmful chemicals and aim for environmental sustainability. They also use significantly less water than conventional cotton, with organically farmed cotton mostly being rain-fed. This is not only better for the earth and for you, but better for the people and communities that cotton is grown in - ensuring cotton farming is not impacting local water or food supplies.

As well as holding the GOTS certification, our cotton is also OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, ensuring no harmful or toxic dyes have been used during any part of the production and that every component of the product (every thread, button and other accessories) has also been tested for harmful substances, ensuring the product is completely safe & toxin free.

Alpaca & Wool

Our dyed throws are made from 80% Alpaca wool sourced from Peru & 20%  Wool sourced from South Africa, and manufactured at a family owned factory in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Our undyed throws are made in Tasmania, in close collaboration with Waverley Mills, the last remaining mill of its kind in Australia, using 100% Australian-grown alpaca wool.

For our undyed throws we sourced a small batch of locally grown Alpaca wool in a rainbow of natural tones. Rather than dying or bleaching the wools, we made a conscious decision to retain their natural beauty, working with our textile designer to create a striated finish that celebrates their inherent beauty.

Alpaca fleece is one of the most sustainable wool options available. The majority of our Peruvian Alpaca fiber comes from animals that live free-range in their native habitat in the Andes Mountains, meaning land clearing is not necessary to raise herds.

The Alpaca also has soft, padded feet similar to dogs which means unlike goats or sheep they do not harm the earth with their hooves. They also require less food & water than goats or sheep, and when they graze they trap grass and plants gently in their mouths without pulling the root, leaving the root system undamaged, meaning a plant can continue to grow after an Alpaca has eaten it.

Alpaca fiber does not contain lanolin or grease which means it is easy to wash and does not require harsh detergents or chemicals to remove these. In fact, it naturally repels dirt & odour meaning it requires minimal laundering (we recommend once per season when in use). It’s also hypoallergenic and the lightest & most thermal of natural fibres - one layer of Alpaca fleece is equivalent to approximately 5 layers of standard wool.

The wool used in our dyed throws is Merino wool, from non-mulesed sheep reared in South Africa (where Mulesing in general is not practised). Our supplier holds a Responsible Wool Standard Certification, ensuring the wool comes from farms that have a progressive approach to managing their land, practise holistic respect for animal welfare of the sheep and respect the Five Freedoms of animal welfare.

Yarn for our Alpaca & Wool throws is OEKO-TEX® 100 certified and the dying process is REACH compliant (the EU equivalent of OEKO-TEX), ensuring no harmful or toxic dyes have been used during any part of the production and that every component of the product has been tested for harmful substances, ensuring the product is completely safe & toxin free.

Cashmere

Although beautiful & natural, unfortunately cashmere is not one of the most sustainable fibres, because of issues with over-farming and degradation of land due to the grazing of the goats. To minimise our impact, we work with traceable cashmere from Inner Mongolia, where cashmere goat husbandry is the main source of income for the area, produced in line with the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) Cashmere Standard

The SFA Cashmere Standard outlines the definition of responsible cashmere production based on these five global principles, which maintains that herders:

  • Ensure the welfare of their goats
  • Safeguard biodiversity and land responsibly
  • Promote decent work
  • Preserve and enhance fibre quality, and
  • Operate an effective management system

Our Cashmere is OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, ensuring no harmful or toxic dyes have been used during any part of the production and that every component of the product (every thread, button and other accessories) has also been tested for harmful substances, ensuring the product is completely safe & toxin free.

Hemp Mix

Our Hemp Mix features a blend of all-natural fibres: Hemp, Organic Cotton, and European Certified Flax® Linen.

Hemp requires very little water and no herbicides or pesticides during cultivation. It is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and is constantly regenerating. Its deep roots help to enrich the soil it grows in, removing heavy metals and other potentially poisonous substances. Acting as a carbon sink, the hemp plant also has the ability to absorb large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. It is a lightweight yet durable fibre and is resistant to pilling.

As per all IN BED textiles, our Hemp Mix blend is OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, ensuring no harmful or toxic dyes have been used during any part of the production and that every component of the product (every thread, button and other accessories) has also been tested for harmful substances, ensuring the product is completely safe & toxin free.
