An Artist’s Retreat in Bordeaux

This week we are transported to wine (and art) country, Bordeaux, France to the home of artists Anaïs Vindel & Maxence Oddone. Together, the pair have created a sanctuary for creativity to roam free, Dyplo House: a space that is part gallery, part studio, part home. During our visit, among their vintage and flea market finds, their retreat is furnished with the creations of friend & sculptor Caroline Desile, a reflection of what Dyplo House set out to be — a hub for art and daily life to intertwine. We hear from Anaïs on this topic, and more, including what a typical day in Bordeaux looks like… and it’s as idyllic as you can imagine.

“Our house, which we have named Dyplo House, is located in Bordeaux. We wanted it to reflect a deep connection between art and daily life. This house is a dynamic creative space where my personal studio occupies a central place.”

“We designed Dyplo House so that the creative process would be an integral part of our everyday life. At any time of the day, I can immerse myself in my studio and let my creativity flow through painting. This creates a fluidity between my daily activities and my artistic practice, creating an environment where inspiration is always within reach.”

“The interior of Dyplo House was conceived as a small art gallery, where my paintings converse with other artworks created by artist friends. Among them, the ceramic sculptures by Caroline Desile add an extra dimension to the artistic atmosphere of the house. These artworks, whether my own creations or those of other artist friends, enrich the space and encourage a constant interaction between different forms of artistic expression.”

“The bedroom was designed with special attention during the renovation to create a space that is both spacious and functional. Taking advantage of the high ceilings, we decided to design a bedroom open to the bathroom, providing a sense of fluidity and space.”

“I admit that the bedroom was my priority. I love working there, whether it's reading, writing, or drawing on the bed. It's a very comforting space for me, where I can relax and let my creative thoughts flow.”

“The bedroom is also very bright, thanks to a window located right above the bed, offering a view of the sky. I love lying down and watching the clouds move, which brings a sense of calm and serenity to the space.”

“The objects in our house are vintage and from flea markets, but we also have works from other artists, adding richness. We have gathered objects from various sources, from little treasures found in nature to pieces discovered during our travels. Each object tells a story and brings a touch of charm and history to our home.”

“This collection includes photographs, ceramics, and much more, harmoniously mixed with my paintings and works by other artists. Every corner of the house reflects our passion for art and our desire to create an inspiring and welcoming space.”

“At the moment, we are very happy to have the wonderful ceramic sculptures of our artist friend Caroline Desile. These pieces add an extra dimension to the artistic atmosphere of the house, creating a dialogue between the different forms of artistic expression.”

“Since childhood, I have always wanted to create. For the past few years, I have dedicated myself entirely to this vocation. I worked for a long time before showing my work because I needed to explore and understand the message I wanted to convey.”

“Photography has always fascinated me, and I wanted this art form to enrich my painting. Today, my work revolves around memory and the transmission of memories. I am inspired by sunsets and scenes in nature that I imagine as ultra-zoomed and blurred.”

“Through a process of synesthesia, I transcribe these images onto the canvas, blending senses and memories to create unique works. My art is an exploration of how memories and visual impressions can be captured and transformed into paintings, offering a new perspective on memory and sensory experience.”

“I loved collaborating with Angelique Delaire. Together, we created a folding screen, which was a very stimulating project where art meets functionality, blending our two worlds.”

“I also collaborated with the Solar Club & Retreats Collective to create a yoga  and art retreat at Casa Cazorla. It was very inspiring, and I loved this project, making wonderful connections along the way.”

“My days are filled with creative energy and follow a structured routine that helps me stay productive and inspired. It all starts with a ritual: I begin my mornings with a good cup of coffee. This quiet moment is often dedicated to reading or a bit of relaxation, allowing me to ease into a creative mindset.”

“Once I've absorbed some inspiration, I head to my studio to work on canvas. Around noon, I take a lunch break, and I love going into town with friends. After lunch, I return to the studio. The afternoon is typically spent refining my work, experimenting, and producing my pieces. By the end of the day, I prioritize well-being and yoga.”

“I love life in Bordeaux. We have great wine and plenty of nice restaurants in the city. I enjoy places like Demeter, Samos, and trying out new spots. Bordeaux is close to the Bassin d'Arcachon and the coast. My favorite beaches are in Bidart in the Basque Country.”

“In Bordeaux, I adore the Capucins Market and the flea markets in the Saint Michel and Rue Notre Dame in the Chartrons district. Bordeaux is a city where life is simple and easygoing. My favorite art gallery is Zone trois Galeries.”

“I'm looking forward to the exhibitions that I'm currently preparing. I can't wait to tell you more about them. The next one will be in Minorca, followed by one in Paris in September.

“I am also delighted to announce my upcoming exhibition with Galerie Pradier Jeauneau, located on Rue de Verneuil in Paris. The exhibition will open on September 6, 2024. I will have the honor of exhibiting alongside designer Mathieu de La Croix, with scenography by Sandra Benhamou. I hope to see you there to share this  moment.”
