Amelia Fullarton, Byron Bay

This week we return to beautiful Byron Bay to visit a long-time IN BED contributor, photographer Amelia Fullarton. Amelia lives with her partner Al, three girls Arlo, Agnes and Ottilie and their pup Secret. We spoke to Amelia about life in Byron and building her creative practice. While the world has changed significantly in the few weeks between shooting and publishing this story we think it’s still so important to read about special people and special places.

“We built this little place about a year after building our main house on the same property. It’s a big 1.5 acre block so we thought we’d build this smaller house to rent out. Instead we ended up just moving in to the little one and renting the main house! It’s only 6 x 10 metres, so pretty tiny for a family of five. We’ve loved living in this space temporarily, after building our house, having three kids and both working full time we were burnt out and kinda over it. it’s meant we’ve been able to slow down a bit and really made us think about what is important to us — our time together and how little you really need.”

“Our bedroom at the moment is small, we still share the room with our youngest who’s almost three, the only way we can all fit in! I love when all the girls come in early in the morning and we have a big snug. I must admit I do miss my king bed— down side of living in a tiny home, double beds are not fun for five people!”

[A normal day in our household] is pretty chaotic, the girls are loud and intense, they love music and dancing so this is usually always happening in the kitchen and living room. I wake up and make coffee literally straight away, so I can survive. If it’s the weekend we’ll head to the beach, this is where we all feel the most happy and relaxed.”

“I love collecting all the girls artworks, obviously family photos are particularly special to me and I’m constantly trying to print and frame more. I’ll probably end up being one of those freak Mums that has a hallway full of all their kids photos. I used to hate how many photos my mum had up of us in the house and now I’m turning into her!”

“If you are in Byron be sure to head in to the Industrial Estate for shopping — lots of great local stores, restaurants, the list is too long to mention but there are so many great people in Byron, doing great things! Really Byron Bay is all about the great outdoors, head to the lighthouse for a walk, visit any of the beaches, soak in the sweet sunshine and you’ll go home feeling a million bucks!”

“For work, I’m mostly a wedding photographer, but do other photography based jobs when I can fit them in. l came about this job by chance after having my first daughter, Arlo, I had just finished a uni degree and was dreading the thought of having to go to work 4-5 days a week and leaving her in care, I couldn’t do it! But we needed money, so I started taking family photos for friends, people in the community and it kind of just took off from there. I feel super lucky I’ve found something that I truly love doing, I’m always learning and trying to grow and push myself more creatively and it’s nice having something for myself, away from my kids.”

“I’m about 4 weeks off birthing our 4th baby, yikes! But we all cannot wait to meet her, especially the girls are so excited to have another sister, it’ll be our last baby so definitely feels like a special time for us.”
