Ana, Dan & Camila, Valle de Bravo, Mexico

In a very special feature we visit long-time IN BED contributors Ana Fernandez Laframboise and Daniel Almazan Klinckwort who have photographed some of our favourite features over the years. Their beautiful home looks out over Lake Avandaro and has been a labour of love for the creative couple since moving in just over a year ago. With an eye for detail and a love of nature Ana and Dan have created a space that feels considered yet lived in, in the best possible way.

“Our home is located in Valle de Bravo, a small lake town located 150km southwest of Mexico City. We moved here after our daughter Camila was born, looking for a slower and simpler life, closer to nature and away from all the big city noise and pollution.”

We love having breakfast looking over the lake. Our house is located at the top of a hill, giving us beautiful views of the town and the lake. Sunsets here are also pretty incredible. Every afternoon, the living room is filled with a beautiful golden light.

When moving here we were looking at ways of living more sustainably and we’ve become passionate about it, mainly through gardening, cooking and reducing waste. We have a small vegetable garden that provides us with fresh vegetables as well as herbs for cooking and making tea.

Our compost system helps us reduce the waste we produce and cooking our own food, sourced from our own garden and local producers with regenerative practices, gives us the chance to ensure the quality and reduce the footprint of the food we eat. Before moving we did some work on the kitchen to make it bigger and brighter. Cooking has become a central activity for us and a good, comfortable kitchen is essential.

Our house in general is very simple and clean. We’ve moved and travelled a lot so we’ve gotten used to not having a lot of things. We’re both in love with the chimney though. It’s in the middle of the living room and provides heat for the whole area. It is clean and minimalist which makes it beautiful to look at and it is a delight to sit in front of the fire during the rainy season.

By living here we have gained access to one of the most thriving and fastest growing movements of organic and regenerative food production in Mexico. We love visiting the farms in the surrounding areas as a way to get inspired for our future farm. There are also tons of options to source food from and places to eat local, healthy food. Our favourite spots for eating out are Garden de Walo, Los Veleros and Dosis Cafe. Also, we love being surrounded by nature. It is one of the biggest luxuries any human can have, to step out the door and go kayaking or paddle boarding on the lake, or hiking and running in the forest.

Luckily, our lives did not change much as we had been working remotely before lockdown. We’ve definitely enjoyed spending more time at home and settling into a slower pace. We miss travelling most of all, and dinners with friends. But it has given us a lot of time for inner growth and reflection, as well as incredibly special family moments. We've been cooking more than ever and have made nature hikes and kayaking a part of our daily lives. Long distance gathering with friends and family via Zoom has also helped ease our need for human connection.

We’re both professional photographers working in the travel and lifestyle industries. Lately, Ana has taken an interest in photographing families with kids and Dan has been working as Co-director and CCO of Aire Libre Running, a specialized travel company for runners he founded back in 2016. For both of us, photography has taken on a more personal role, where we do not fully depend on it to make a living and we’re able to explore subjects creatively that are closer to our hearts and interests.
